Description
Florida Humanities and Port Orange County Library present a book talk with Rebecca Renner, author of Gator Country: Deception, Danger, and Alligators in the Everglades. Gator Country dives into the twisting true story of the impossible choices individuals must make to stay afloat in this world. Through its unique blend of reporting, nature writing, and personal narrative, this book transports readers to vibrant and dangerous Florida landscapes and offers intimate portraits of those who call the region home. Broad in scope and vivid in detail, "Gator Country" is a fast-paced tale of the risks people will take to survive in one of the world's most beautiful yet formidable landscapes and the undercover investigation that threatens to topple the whole scheme.
Rebecca Renner is an author and National Geographic contributor from Daytona Beach, Florida. She holds an MFA from Stetson University. Gator Country is Rebecca’s debut, as well as the Florida Humanities Center for the Book adult selection for “Great Reads from Great Places,” an annual literary heritage list organized by the Library of Congress.
This is the first program in the Florida Humanities Center for the Book 2024-2025 Book Series. Participants are invited to explore our local environment through literature at stops organized in the counties of Broward, Hillsborough, Monroe, Pinellas, and Volusia. Travelers, authors, and adventures have been inspired by the flora and fauna of Florida since the earliest writings. Each program in this series offers an opportunity to engage in deeper discussion on how we have been inspired and lived with the ever-changing natural world.
